Bellissima Italia

From a young age, I've been interested in learning about my Italian heritage. By now, I've traveled to Italy several times including visits to Rome, Tuscany, Venice, the northern Lakes and southern isle of Capri.

My adventures have included bicycling along the ancient walls of Lucca; taking a funicular to Brunate, a scenic hilltop town overlooking Como; climbing the steep tower in Siena's Piazza del Campo for spectacular views of the city; walking along the rooftop of the grand Duomo di Milano and visiting the stunning Cinque Terre, the famed five villages built into the cliffs on the Italian Riviera. Even a stop at a local negozio di alimentari to sample regional cheese, long-stemmed artichokes and prosciutto and to converse with the friendly shop owner was a memorable event. Another was a trip to the charming medieval Tuscan city of Siena to attend an Italian language school program.

The decorative, hand-painted Italian ceramiche I've brought back are mementoes of this beautiful country -- a reminder that there is still much more to see.

  1. So a traveling spirit is one of your brand attributes, huh? Very nice. Thanks for that brief armchair vacation.

I have to say that you whet my appetite with descriptions of a "funiular" or "hand-painted Italian ceramiche," for example.

  2. That's a good point, thanks.

To be more clear, Wikipedia defines funicular as:
"A funicular, also known as an inclined plane or cliff railway, is a cable railway in which a cable attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails moves them up and down a steep slope; the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalance each other."

    Italian "ceramiche": hand-painted ceramics/pottery.

  3. I learned what a funicular was this winter with my parents in Deer Valley, UT. Great way to get spectacular views -- especially in the snow.

  4. Very cool. I recently took a funicular in Quebec City to get from Upper Town to Lower Town. A short, but dramatic ride.
